Sleepy's "Fido Fun Day"
We couldn't do what we do without the help of our dedicated volunteers!
The behavior team here at SPCA Tampa Bay designed the "Fido's Fun Day" program to give our shelter dogs a break, time away from the day-to-day of shelter life. This field trip also helps us learn more about the dog's personality outside of a sometimes stressful shelter environment. Characteristics, likes and dislikes learned from Fido Fun Day help in finding each dog a family that is a perfect fit! Outings improve their socialization and stimulates their brain with different activities and smells. A day spent out and about with a volunteer also gives the dog exposure and a chance at finding love OUTSIDE of our shelter.
September 1, 2019: Our dog-walker volunteer, Denelle, took a 67-pound, 9-year old male pup named Sleepy on a Fido's Fun WEEKEND and here's what she had to share:
"Sleepy
was such a good boy! He explored every corner of my house (when we arrived Sunday), but was very
careful not to make a mess or knock anything over.
"Is a large doggo, must mind large-o boy tail swings and not make a mess!" - Sleepy |
At first he (began) rolling against the floor, so I got a brush out and he
seemed to love that. He didn't roll around like that again after that. Then he
quickly found his favorite place to watch over us - at the front door!
"Is guard dog! - also I don't want to miss ANYTHING, so I'll just wait by this door." - Sleepy |
(On Sunday) We went for a long walk around the neighborhood and did the mile-loop at the Northwest Rec Center, then came home to nap.
"They don't call me SLEEPY for nothing." - Sleepy |
We heard a bit of thunder Sunday
night, and Sleepy was very frightened. He just shivered and stayed close. The
sounds went away quickly and he was back to his old self.
"Am not scared, am brave boy, but....will you come closer?" - Sleepy |
Monday (Labor Day) we walked again at Crescent Lake Park, and then went to Dog Bar (in St. Pete). He didn't like
sitting in one place very long, so we didn't stay there. It's also not easy to get good pictures of a (curious boy) constantly
on the move, lol!
He
was a very good sleeper, and didn't wake us up at all overnight. He patiently
waited for us to get up and let him out to potty."
"This floor is nice and coollll, just like me." -Sleepy |
Denelle returned Sleepy to SPCA Tampa Bay on Tuesday after his long Labor Day sleepover. She said he didn't want to leave her! Sleepy had such a great time he wouldn't get out of the car and it was kind of humorous.
Sleepy is currently available for adoption and hoping to find a family that is just as fun and sweet as his friend, Denelle!

Darn I wish I had seen this when in Largo.
