Spencer's Journey: From Foster To Fabulous!

Part 1: May 3, 2019

11-year old Spencer came to SPCA Tampa Bay with two canine housemates after his caretaker ran into financial difficulties. Spencer’s spine was injured by another dog when he was young, which left him limping but not in pain. As Spencer grew older, however, his owner noticed Spencer having more trouble getting around. Visits to specialists grew more expensive, especially for a house with three dogs. Finally, his owner asked SPCA Tampa Bay to accept all three animals. Upon intake, it was decided that Spencer would need to spend time in the Foster Care.

Part 2: June, 2019

Spencer is making progress! His spinal issues made it hard for him to stand in the slippery kennel floor so his foster home with CEO, Martha Boden, was perfect. His foster family gave Spencer rugs to walk on so he could get around more comfortably.

An appointment with his original neurologist revealed some treatment options Spencer’s original owner hadn’t tried. He began new medication that helped him stand and walk. He began moving around better and even playing with toys, plus he got a new haircut!

Spencer’s housemate were quickly adopted from the shelter in Largo, but Spencer needed extra time and special care. His foster mom said he really came out of his shell at her home. But he was going to need a special family for his forever home.

Part 3: July 10, 2019

Look at him go! Spencer demonstrated his new-found confidence and strength as he said goodbye to his foster mother and hello to his new family.  Spencer’s journey to improve his coordination and stability after a spinal injury continues, but the latest chapter started on July 10, 2019 when Diane and her family welcomed the little trouper into their lives.

Congratulations, Spencer! We are so proud of you!
